TARSHI believes in the right of all people and especially young people
and women, to have information on sexuality, so they can make informed
choices about their own lives. The right to information about one’s own
body, the right to choose what one does with one's body and the right
to make informed health related decisions vests in each individual.
Over more than a decade TARSHI has worked towards making accurate
information available to young people through the
helpline,
publications
such as
the Red book and
the Blue book, and conducting
trainings and sensitisation sessions
in schools and colleges on varied issues related to sexuality.
Studies such as the one commissioned by the WHO and Global programme on
AIDS, authenticate what we have found to be true from our work
experience; that when young people have been given correct information,
they are often in a better position to make responsible and safer
choices for themselves.
We believe that the Indian Government has not given priority to
developing and introducing a school curriculum partly due to competing
socio-political compulsions. There are many gaps in the present
draft
version of the curriculum and we have provided our feedback and made
recommendations on bridging those gaps. Please read TARSHI’s
review of
the revised sexuality education curriculum in India. For a shorter
version of the review please read
this.
TARSHI is engaging with many organizations and individuals at various
fora such as conferences, seminars and small group discussions to
highlight the importance of sexuality education for young people.
On the occasion of TARSHI’s 13th anniversary on February 14, 2009, initiated an
open letter to press for the
urgency of sexuality education for young people and voice opinions on
why sexuality education is important and how the introduction of
sexuality education could significantly change people’s lives!
We call on you to join us in the process! Please sign on to the
open letter
and help us in spreading the word! |
