Channel News Asia - Mexico City, Mexico, 1/1/2021
On December 31, 2020, one day after the Argentine Senate voted to make abortion legal, Mexico’s President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador was asked during a news conference whether he thought Mexico should follow suit. The president declined to take a position on the issue and said that it should be for Mexico’s female population to decide. Abortion is legal in Mexico City and the state of Oaxaca, but it remains prohibited in most of the country except under exceptional circumstances, such as rape. According to a nationwide survey in September, 2019 by newspaper El Financiero, 63% of people were against the right to abortion, and 32% in favour.
