This could not be further from the truth. Prostitution has always been very active in Thailand long before the Vietnam war. Western men only account for a small percentage of the john’s in Thailand. Most of the prostitution that occurs has nothing to do with tourists. Every city in Thailand has a booming sex industry, and aside from the major tourist areas, these are catering to Thai clientele.
