We need a sexual revolution in the Middle East – Mona Ethawi

On a foggy winter morning, a woman protestor waves a victory sign, looks upwards, and shouts what could be possibly be a slogan. She wears a pink and white coloured headscarf and a grey coat. There are hoards of other protestors in the background too.

Mona Eltahawy, author of ‘Headscarves and Hymens: Why the Middle East Needs a Sexual Revolution’, speaks about how any social revolution, any where in the world, will fail unless accompanied by a sexual revolution which has consent and agency at its heart. Removing regimes from the presidential houses that oppress both men and women does not free women from oppression in the houses and in the streets, she says.
