There were 22 participants who came from different countries within the region, namely: Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Sri Lanka and Vietnam. They were selected on the basis of an application process. The cost of travel and accommodation for all participants was covered. The faculty /resource persons were from TARSHI, ARROW (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) and Ms. Khartini Slamah.

Faculty

Khartini Slamah has been involved in HIV/AIDS work for over 22 years. Khartini is currently Chair of the Transgender Core Group, Transgender Programme, PT Foundation, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. She is also the Coordinator of the Asia Pacific Network of Sex Workers (APNSW), a Board Member, Network of Sex Work Projects (NSWP) and founder of Asia Pacific Transgender network (APTN). She is a technical expert on sex work with the WHO. In the past, she has done some research on transgender issues locally and regionally. Khartini has also worked with the UNDP and UNAIDS in Kuala Lumpur, and done consultancy work with other international organizations. Khartini is based in Malaysia. She finds that being a transsexual and a Muslim is really a dilemma and believes that if society is educated about sexuality and gender, transgendered and transsexual people will find acceptance.

Sai Jyothirmai Racherla holds a Masters in Nutrition (MSc) and is currently pursing Population Studies. She started her career working as a research assistant in Indian Council of Agricultural Research. She also worked with CARE India (International Relief and Development Organisation) before being associated with ARROW. Sai is currently the Programme Officer for the ICPD+15 project and in this capacity has been involved in the project implementation and co-writing of ‘Reclaiming & Redefining Rights- ICPD+15: Status of Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights in Asia’ - the ARROW regional overview on fifteen years of ICPD implementation in twelve Asian countries.

Sivananthi Thanenthiran holds a First Class Honours degree in English Literature and an MA in Critical and Cultural Theory. Siva’s first experience with ARROW was as a consultant to edit and publish the IRRMA project findings titled ‘Rights & Realities’ and it gave her a wide exposure to the issues that ARROW deals with and the range of partners and researchers and activists which ARROW works with. Currently Siva is associated with ARROW as a Programme Manager, Information and Communications. She also currently manages the ICPD+15 project - which spans 22 partners in 12 countries and she co-wrote 'Reclaiming & Redefining Rights - ICPD+15: Status of Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights in Asia.’

From TARSHI:

Prabha Nagaraja worked in the field of disability and special education before focusing her work in the area of sexuality. She has been involved in sexuality training for several years. She has been a counselor and supervisor of the TARSHI Helpline. She is particularly interested in disability and sexuality related issues. 

Gunjan Sharma is a trainer and counsellor on issues of sexuality, sexual health and HIV and AIDS. She has worked extensively on these issues with a wide variety of groups and has special interest in working with women and adolescents in building capacities and life skills around reproductive and sexual health. 

Sameera Shamim has a Masters in Social Work and worked in TARSHI as Programme Associate. She aspires to learn more about the linkages between disability and sexuality. At TARSHI, she worked on both programme and administrative aspects, which included logistical support, assisting in programme management, trainings and research.
