Sexual Diversity in Asian Society
The South and Southeast Asia Resource Centre on Sexuality hosted an Open Forum on Sexual Diversity in Asian Society on September 15, 2006 (2 to 5 pm) at Surabaya University, Psychology faculty (first floor), Surabaya, Indonesia.
Speakers from five different countries in South and Southeast Asia were invited:
- Germaine Leonin from The Philippines
- Michael De Guzman from Cambodia
- Minn Thu from Myanmar
- Agniva Lahiri from India
- Bayzid from Bangladesh
They spoke about their participation in the Applied Study Programme on Sexual Diversity and Rights organised by The South and Southeast Asia Resource Centre on Sexuality and GAYa NUSANTARA, from Aug 23 - Sep 19, 2006, in Surabaya, Indonesia. They also shared their knowledge and their experience in their respective countries.
Arpita Das and Sumit Baudh jointly moderated the forum and Dede Oetomo provided the interpretation from English to Indonesian Bahasa.
After all speakers finished saying what they had to say there was an active discussion and question-answer session. The Forum was attended by close to 100 people, mostly students and faculty from the Surabaya University.
About the Speakers:
Germaine Trittle Leonin is the Government Officer, Policy and Legal Research Coordinator and member of the Rainbow Right Project in Philippines.
Michael P. De Guzman is a freelance consultant working on HIV/AIDS and MSM issues in Cambodia.
Minn Thu is the National Officer (Monitoring and Evaluation), Fund for HIV/AIDS in Myanmar (FHAM), UNAIDS, Myanmar.
Agniva Lahiri is the Executive Director of People Like Us (PLUS) in Calcutta, India.
Bayzid is the Executive Director of Organization of Development Programme for the Underprivileged, in Bangladesh
Dédé Oetomo is the co-founder and a member of the board of trustees of GAYa NUSANTARA Foundation, an organisation working for the sexual health of gay men, transgendered people and male sex workers, based in Surabaya, East Java, Indonesia.
Arpita Das is the Programme Associate, Sumit Baudh is the Senior Programme Associate; both are located at the South and Southeast Asia Resource Centre on Sexuality, in New Delhi, India.
